what OS are we talking about??

in win2k/XP scheduled tasks are controlled by the task scheduler service...

that doesn't work, it has been scheduled to run C:\games\half-life\psychostats\stats.pl every day at 1PM but it has never done the task the last oh........ about 36 times it was supposed to

my guess is that scheduled tasks is a joke because it never worked on any of my other computers

Is "Schedule" running in your list of services? Is it set to run automatically?

Task Scheduler has a log file, check the log to see why it didn't run. It may be as simple as you need to put in username/password with the scheduled job.

Within the Services icon you should see Task Scheduler and then check to see if it is started or not (and you can also change it's startup settings there).

    is scheduled tasks a service?
    yes

i think it's just that winblows is screwed. i figured out which account i'm using by checking the desktop folders for each user. it says that my username is "david darichuk.shawn" so i put in that name as who to run it as and set a pasword then it tells me cannot run because incorrect user name

WTF?!?!? WINDOWS YOU PIECE OF CRAP!!!!

btw david darichuk.shawn is the ONLY way you can log in, there is no option to log in as administrator and you can't switch over to being the administrator.

I think WinXP reduces your options by default. I would still think the Administrator account is there, you just need to change your viewing preferences to remove the "improvements" in the UI.

ok.. to log in as the ADMINISTRATOR in Windows XP...
    First LOG OUT..
    hot hit ctrl-alt-del TWICE
    username "administrator" *NO QUOTES*
    pass <whatever you used @ install>

now go to start >> run and type " services.msc" *DITTO*
in the right hand pane.... scroll down to task scheduler
now Right click on it and select properties.
Is the startup type set to "Automatic" if not change it...
Also what is the service status?? It should be "Started"
hit Apply... ( you can manually start the service now if you want to if it's not running)
    Click on the Recovery Tab....
Set all the failure options to "restart the service"
Set eh timer to 5 minutes.. this way what ever prevented the service from starting has 5 minutes to get out of the way..
    Hit Apply then OK....

now your problem SHOULD be fixed....
    {but as a side note I have never attempted to run a perl script with task scheduler}

    and now for a sidenote...
    [no flames pls]

A cronjob is basically the same thing as TaskScheduler.
They both chek to see what time the CMOS clock has and depending on the answer perform certain functions. Which in windows is known as scheduled task.

Actually, I don't have an "administrator" account in my winXP Pro either, becuase I defaulted to "Mum and Dad" . So I have no option to log in as "Administrator", but "Mum and Dad" is listed as Computer Administrator. Chooco, go to control panel, user accounts, and check the users and see which one is computer administrator. That one can change the services. If you can't get into User Accounts, you are out of luck, becuase someone has disabled your only user account from access to Admin. Did you set this one up yourself??

In my XP Pro install I only created three accounts but the Administrator (and Guest) is also in there (just relatively hidden).

Note AzKidd69's instructions again, you should be able to type in the Administrator usersname (not pick it from the original list).
