I keep losing my Start bar and can't get it back

Ok so for some reason when I open up a folder that has Video files (sometimes pic folders too) and try to do Thumbnail view Xp has and error which results in a immediat lost of my start bar and it doesn't come back. Got any ideas how I can get it back without restarting? Thanks.

ctrl alt del which may (or may not) bring up task manager

File --> New Task (Run..)

type
explorer.exe

if it does not bring up task manager, I'd suggest installing SP2 to see if that fixes it.
Also if you hit ctrl alt del and it brings up the lock screen notification, you can choose the task manager button and start from there.

I get that sometimes too. I just restart and it goes away but if you keep having that problem every time you open a folder with that its a bug in the os and upgrading to sp2 or doing a repair may help it to go away.

old divx codecs cause SP2 to crash explorer when windows attempts to preview/scan video files. I think anything before 5.0.5 causes trouble. I'm sure there are other causes, but thats the only one I've had trouble with in the past.

Spread the news.

Don't... under any circumstance install Kazaa. I don't care if it's light, full blown, or whatever. Stay away from the loser program. It's the worst thing you can put on your computer (as a voluntary install) aside from ME and AOL.

Not only does it install spyware to your registry (yes even Lite does), but the interface and files you get on Kazaa's networks SUCK. There are SO many better options which include EDonkey or Bittorrent (only the software, find the torrents on your own).

This thread was not about Kazaa, but about codecs (for videos and pictures). Whilst I agree Kazza is mainly spyware and malware, there was no mention of Kazaa in this thread, just a problem with older divx codecs.

Cheers
Mick
