New Problem shutting down computer

I am running XP Home. Ive notice that now when I click start/turn off computer, it takes almost 3-4 mins before the shutdown screen comes up now. It used to pop up right away. Could something in the sevices section of Administative tools be out of whack causing this? Or could it be that it just takes that long to shut down the running programs, which is only Norton Protection and Norton Internet Securtiy that I know of, unless there is a way to check exactly what has to be shut down, maybe I can stop them if I dont need them running so the computer shuts down faster. thanks
