Are the various service packs such as 3, backward compatible? In otherwords, do you have to install all 3 packs or just the latest one. Please advise and TIA. |

All service packs are cumulative and cover everything in previous packs. Therefore, install service pack 2 and you get everything in service pack 1 and 2. Hope this helps,

Seeing as SP 3 is not listed on Microsoft's site yet, I'm assuming it's still in beta.
edit- A quick look at www.ntcompatible.com confirms this |

Haven't heard of W2000Pro Service Pack 3 just yet because it isn't listed on the Windows Update Website just yet.
When I installed Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 on a laptop running the first release of Windows NT 4.0, it just installed fine and I had all the features from all the past service packs of the NTOS. I'll have to assume that if you only have the very first release of Windows 2000 Pro OS and if you are going to move up immediately to Service Pack 3, then I'm going to assume that you probably don't need to get Service Pack 2 first, although it's rather a good idea to get Service Pack 2 first (My OEM Copy of Win2K Pro is actually a Service Pack 2-native copy).
To conclude, the latest Service Pack for Windows 2000 Pro is Service Pack 2. |

If it's still in beta then I'd avoid that puppy for sure. Don't know about you guys I've had updates crash my machine. Think I'll stick with sp2 and wait until after 3's been out for a month or so...

Yeah stay away from SP3 unless you like testing betas. There are also plenty of Hotfixes out from SP3 you can download seperatly if needed. |

"...unless you like testing betas..."
I don't have a problem with that as it will be a fresh test install anyway. Anyway, thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

Yeah, I didn't apply SP3 for Win2k either because it's still a beta release...
Here's where you can download it if you want to try it... Here
And here is where you can get info on the fixes
