I have no personal knowledge, but with a CPU that "slow" you'll have to diable all the shinies like Aero to get it to run. Chances are it will be extremely slow and you would be better sticking with XP.

I wouldn't even try it personally... It might run but won't be very functional.

I have installed XP Pro on a 300 with 128 and it worked fully but slow. Wondering how accurate the poop MS is putting out is. |

I wouldn't recommend installing Vista on anything. |

Vista should be able to run on that. You will just need to disable the extra junk like tony said.
On my server I have Vista Business on it and it uses 300-400MB of ram(not including the extra cache which keeps everything in the memory used recently to make it load faster, that isn't included because it is not needed and will only speed your pc up).
And I am using about 4% of my cpu with it idling(P4 2.4C). Quote:

Go bash MS on a different forum with the rest of the 12 year olds.
EDIT: Also, that 300-400MB includes all the services I have running extra. I installed apache, php, mysql, svn, ftp, and a few others, so it should be less normally.

I would'nt bother trying it on a pc that slow, its pretty pointless unless you have a few hours spare i guess.
EXreaction do you work for m$ or something? every single thread i look at that mentions vista you are there telling everyone how great it is and are very quick to quote and reply to any less then great comment about vista. |

The reason for that is because I know a lot more about the OS than most people that bash it do. I would say a good 99% of the people that bash MS don't know wtf they are talking about and just are repeating what others say. So I try and put those fools in their place, because I hate fools, especially ignorant fools. |

Ex, Sam's posted opinion about Vista is about as valid as your recently posted opinion of vBulletin. In reality, what works for one person, might not work for another.
Back on topic, Vista should be "acceptable" on an 800MHz system for basic tasks. As others have noted, disable Aero and most advanced graphical features/effects. The biggest bottleneck is the memory, and Vista certainly likes plenty of it. 512MB is going to be a working minimum for realistic desktop computing, just don't expect much in the way of multitasking. |
