Building new PC-Which MS OS is best for games and graphics?

I am putting together my fist PC build. I have an old clunker I have been using for years. PII 330mhz. I have Windows 2000 Pro. I hate to spend the money on a new system and reuse my 2000 pro OS.

I am a gammer, and with the new system I am working on, I'll deffinately get back into playing games. I will also be using it to get into video editing, along with the standard web surfing.

I noted that there are quite a few MS OS versions to pick from. I am not interested in Vista yet.

What is the most popular for gamming?

The only that is not 2000 or Vista is XP. I would personally get Vista because that's the one developers are going to optimize their stuff for. If you're not going to get Vista, just reuse Windows 2000.

Personally, I would just stick with 2000 for now and then upgrade to vista at a later time. Like Shawn said, they are going to be optomizing for it. Also, currently because the Vista is so new, some developers haven't gotten 100% working drivers out and there are still some bugs that will pop up as with any new OS.
