Windows blue screen of death question

I've got a Presario Laptop with Win Me loaded on it. I get the blue screen almost constantly. No heavy applications in process, just hitting the enter key will bring it on. I've gone in and lanched earlier widows registry to no avail. I got a quick restore CD on order from Compaq, which will mirror the original windows setup. I'm going to try thay next.
My questions is this.....Is the Windows blue screen 99% of time registry issues? Can it be hardware such as memory?

    Your thoughts please......

If you haven't already done so, I'd recommend going to Microsoft's update site. There has been several fixes for ME.

Upgrade definately on that ME. Most of the common error messages are software related. The most common of hardware would be memory. Bad memory that passes POST, can cause blue screens a lot, but in your case it is probably software.

Try using another OS on it for a while, for diagnostic reasons . . like Windows 98SE.

If another OS runs stable, then you know its WinME causing your problems.

If the other OS doesnt run stable, then you know its a hardware or driver problem.

That does sound like memory. Has it always done this? Might be a fan quit too, and it's overheating.
