Windows Vista update error 80244019

I've been running Vista ultimate for about 2 months now with automatic update enabled. All recommended and important updates have installed without problems, except one which has failed 5 times now:
===============
Hewlett-Packard - Other Hardware - HP Photosmart D7100 Series (DOT4USB)

Installation date: ‎24/‎05/‎2007 10:37

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80244019

Update type: Recommended

Hewlett-Packard Other Hardware sofware update released in January, 2007

More information:
http://winqual.microsoft.com/support/?driverid=20034211

More information:
http://support.microsoft.com/select/?target=hub
====================

Neither of the links seems to lead to useful data, although the first one might indicate a problem with HP's driver update rather than at my end.

The only references to Code 80244019 I can find talk about Group Policy and other esoteric stuff. I'm pretty sure I'm not using this as it's a stand alone PC. Unless it's a default of the installation. Why is this one failing and all the others "take"?

A secondary problem is that whenever I try to follow the help links I get an error box

"Internet Explorer cannot download / from Windows

Internet Explorere was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either
unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

In this case it is trying to follow a link to:

mshelp://Windows/?id=26d54faf-bee6-4d4a-b5e7-2f08b53c2c4c

and neither Firefox nor IE7 know about the "mshelp" protocol

I'm not too worried about either of these problems, but they are annoying and it would be nice to have the latest drivers for my printer.

HP is hedging. They've had ample time to write drives for Vista. They're just blowing a smokescreen at you to buy themselves a little more time. They did a similar cop-out when XP released SP2. Some of their all-in-ones would not work correctly with out updated drivers, which of course were not available. It was weeks before they cleared that one up. They eventually shipped installation CDs with the new drivers to the retailers for new customers who purchased their printers.

Surely this would mean that MS are complicit in this. HP creates a driver that will not install under Visa. It is shipped to MS who put it on the update site as a certified Visa driver without running any installation, compliance or functionality tests.

The device, a new Photosmart D7160, works fine with the existing drivers. Which is why I'm not particularly bothered by the problem, just annoyed. I'd just like to have the latest drivers.

It's the automatic update from the MS Windows Update site that's failed 5 times now for this one download. All other updates to Vista are downloaded automatically and installed OK. It would appear from the error that the download takes place OK, but it then won't install.

You don't EVER use "updated" drivers from Microsoft...
9 times out of ten they bork up your system...
If the device isn't having any issues, the best bet is to leave it alone... if it IS having issues, go to the manufacturers site for the latest drivers/firmware...

Windows Vista update error 80244019

The cause of error 80244019 was a Trojan Virus!!

I have Windows Vista with SP1 and Internet Explorer 7. After a week of trying different suggestions from people on the Internet, I realized there was something wrong with the DNS address.

I went to "Local Area Connection" and opened the properties, then the properties of the item "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", and noticed that instead of having selected "Obtain DNS server address automatically", it was using:

Preferred DNS server: 85.255.113.122
Alternate DNS server: 85.255.112.83

I removed the 2 DNS addresses and changed the option back to "Obtain DNS server address automatically" but it wouldn't keep it. I did this several times without luck.

If you Google the first address "85.255.113.122" you'll find some articles describing how to get rid of malicious software from your computer and a Trojan virus called DNSchanger that installs some files (c:\resycled\boot.com; c:\windows\system32\kdtjz.exe) and modifies your registry to redirect to these addresses:

HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Service s\...\Parameters\Tcpip\NameServer = 85.255.113.122,85.255.112.83

See this link:
PC Pitstop Forums > dnschanger found, microsoft money box keeps appearing

I'm using Norton Anti Virus and it didn't detect the Trojan virus, so I downloaded HijackThis and "Spybot - Search & Destroy", which are for free. I also got a copy of "PC Tools Spyware Doctor".

I removed all cookies and temporary internet files from Internet Explorer and Firefox. Then I rebooted my computer in safe mode and run all the anti-virus and anti-spyware I had downloded, and followed their instructions.

After removing the Trojan virus, I reset my DNS address and flushed it. You'll probably need "elevated" permissions...to do this you need to right click the "cmd.exe" file to "Run as Administrator" and then type:

>ipconfig /flushdns

I also upgraded IE to version 8-beta. Then finally was able to update windows with no errors !!!

Hope this helps, I spent a lot of time trying to fix this one,

-Jorge

Windows Vista Update 80244019
Follow steps to the letter
1. Download freeware Anti-Malware Remover from
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php (www.malewarebytes.org)

2. install,
3. run “simple scan”
4. Immediately after rebooting start “windows update” from the control panel . . . and upgrade to “Internet Explorer 8” upgrade via google.com search as well.

I do not anyone to suffer the three painfully laborious weeks it took me to figure this problem out.
And if you’re charging people to fix their computer TEACH your customers how to “untangle the mess” on their own as a form of educational-reinvestment.
