XP vs Vista?

Ok. Im new to computers and such. I am planning on getting a system soon and was wondering what would work best. I am going to be using it for Gaming and Music purposes. What would be my best option. Windows XP or Vista?

ATM, XP would be the better choice, but as soon as DX 10 gets into the mainstream and Vista's bugs get fixed, Vista will be the better choice. Also if you are going to use this OS for the next few years, I'd get Vista. Performance will drop, but in the long run, it'll be 1 less upgrade to worry about and another $100+ you dont have to spend.

Go with Vista, just about everything works with it now and support is only going to get better. It is afterall the mainstream OS right now, so why not? I'm running Vista on two of my main desktop machinse and have not had a reason to go back to XP. Sure, there may be a few bumps here and there, but they are minor and can be worked around for the most part. XP only has a few months of support left as it is.

Vista = DX10!!!
But watch out for music content that you may not be able to copy for your own back up use.

I have XP and Vista on my PC they both are great but I like to boot into Vista for COH game and XP for other apps and games that run better without Vista.

I read somewhere that Windows Vista has this DRM thing to prevent copyright-protected music files from being copied in any sort of manner. Just another thing Microsoft is doing to "prevent piracy".

You'd probably have to be worried about that if you were buying music from iTunes or something that has all that copyright crap preinstalled on that mp3. Its probably different story if you're ripping music from a CD from the 1990's and throwing it around your "My Music" folder.

I'm still using XP here, I'm still considering to get Vista on my next hard drive I'm about to buy. BTW I never even touched Windows Vista before so I barely know what its like :O

Games run about the same on both operating systems at the moment.

Vista is a little bit of a resource hog, so you'll want to have 2GB of ram.

BUT In about a half a year, if you plan on playing the new games, you'll want to have Vista and a DX10 card.
