| Troubles Installing Win98
I don't get it. I've done this a million times!!!
I'm doing an install for one of the execs. p233, 128megs, 6gigs. Windows won't install. It will run through the scandisk, check the registry and then sits at the "copying install files". I've tried installing it from the CD and I've tried copying the the files to the hard drive and running set-up from there but no can do. The hd is clean I fidisked it and formatted. Any one have any ideas?

find drive make (WD,Seagate etc)go to website and see if they have a utility that will write 0's to the drive.I have had that prob in the past(WD drive) and this is the only way I could get it to work.there may be others,I stopped looking when I found this to work. |

Why is Windows being re-installed? Was there a problem prior to your attempt to re-install Windows? If the prior Windows went to hell for no reason I would look for a hardware problem. I've had similar problems with bad ram or improper voltages. |

can't be the cd drive since he tried to install it from the harddrive and that most likely rules out the cd being bad or it couldn't have been copied
while setting up try disabling the advanced features of bios like
Memory Shadow RAM
Video Shadow RAM
Internal Cache
External Cache
Built-in Virus Protection
use the slower memory settings etc
no more hardware than absolutely necessary to get it running remove any lan cards modems sound

I've had a similar deal with a bad CD-ROM drive, but that's been ruled out. The other time it had me chasing my tail was when the CMOS battery was giving up the ghost. Worth a shot, anyway if wiping the drive doesn't do it.

Well, it turns out the hard drive was bad. After doing a surface scan there were 9 bad sectors and only 2 could be fixed. I have since tried installing on another hard drive in the same box and I am having the same problem. I will try the cmos battery, and disabling features in the bios as mentioned here. I will also try replacing the cable and a new win98 disk. This is wierd, I've done a million of these installs and never had this problem. I'll post back a little later.
thanks all |
