i have a gateway laptop and one minute it was fine the next minute the screen went blank. When using my recovery disk, it kept stopping at NTLDR is missing. It then says hit ctrl, alt and deleat to reboot. But it always goes back to the same screen. Can this be fixed? |

Make sure the disk is clean and try again. This is typical, I have seen this before too.
Is it from the CD? because NTLDR is suppose to be on C:\
NTLDR and Netdetect.com. Both can be put back on the drive through the recovery console. Or by accessing the drive from another computer and putting the two files back on C:\

What this essentially means is reinstall windows. I have attempted many of the fixes for this, and they've never properly worked for you.
You can attempt to boot to emergency rescue console by booting from your XP cd, and then log onto your c:\windows installation (if its the default), log in as administrator, and then expand i:\i386\ntldr.ex_ c:\, if I recall correctly..
you can also attempt attrib -r -a -s -h boot.ini
del boot.ini
bootcfg /scan
bootcfg /rebuild
and going from there
you may also attempt to do a repair by not hitting R for repair at the 1st windows screen, but instead hitting enter, selecting your installation, and then attempting to repair it. if it doesn't work, its likely because ntldr, ntoskrnl, config\system and other items are missing.
long story short: backup data & reinstall wind0ze. |

Hello,
Try this. Take Care.
1. Boot from your Windows XP CD ***
2. When Prompted "Press" key to boot from CD
3. Press "R" to access the Recovery Console
4. Press "1" to select Windows XP as Operating System
5. Press "Enter" for the Administrative Password
6. Copy the files "NTLDR", and "NTDETECT.com" (located on the Windows XP CD in the I386 Folder, or Floppy/CD if you copied them from another computer) to the C: Drive (just in case if you don't know DOS or forgot the command: copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
7. If prompted to overwrite "Press" Y
8. "Type" Bootcfg /add to reconstruct the Boot.ini
Scanning should start, and you will be given 1 option. "Press" 1, and "Enter". Leave "Load Identifier" Blank.
9. For OS Load Options "Type" /fastdetect
10. When Completed "Restart" the computer, and you should be good to go. If not reload the OS. I hope that this helped. Take Care.
*** Ensure that your CD has the SP2 on it. If not copy the files "NTLDR", and NTDETECT.com" from a computer that has SP2 installed to a Floppy Disk or CD before proceeding.

If you are booting from a recovery CD, then NTDETECT should be on that disc. The chances of it being gone or corrupt on the hard drive and the rescue media would seem unlikely. Enter BIOS Setup Utility and make sure that the CD precedes the hard drive in the boot order.
Bear in mind that NTLDR may not be missing at all. It may be that the MBR is corrupt or the hard drive may be gone all together. The message is the same. |
