| IE7 locks up occasionally
I did a complete reformat and reinstall of my laptop about a month ago, just for the performance boost, and I've currently got XP home updated as far as it can go. My problem is that Internet Explorer has been locking up occasionally on loading or backing up to a page as much as once an hour for the last couple weeks. This isn't a big deal, I get a 'not responding' message and close it (it closes fine, no time lag), and then I just open it up again and start over; it is, however, kind've a pain in the ass. I don't think it's a spyware issue (haven't had spyware in a year or so, maybe that's one good thing about Chinese web controls), and I'm not running any third party toolbars or anything. The issue occurs at random, with no apparent regard to the particular webpage it locks up on. Any ideas? |

IE can be a harsh mistress.. generally when it starts acting up, the best thing to do (after spyware scans) is to uninstall the current version or upgrade to IE 7.
If you're on IE 7 now, go to Start > Run and type "C:\WINDOWS\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe" to remove it. You'll be left with IE 6, go back to M$ site and download 7 again.
If you're on IE 6, go to M$ site and "upgrade" to IE 7 |

You can try updating Flash & Shock too. I've had Flash go bad & cause big problems with IE. |

could be related to a security software you have installed.... what do you have installed?
also, do you regularly run Disk Cleanup? if not, choose Start->Run and type in "cleanmgr.exe"... let it calculate then check "Temporary Internet Files" and "Temporary Files" and click OK. Windows doesn't handle too many temporary files very well |

Alright, I've run a spyware scan (clean), uninstalled and reinstalled IE7, ensured that Shockwave and Flash Player are up-to-date, and deleted TIFs (although I did so via Disk Cleanup just a couple days ago as well). Now all there is to do is wait, I suppose; the problem is intermittent, and could take 2 or 3 hours of pure web browsing to show up if it's still around. Since I have more important things in life than concentrated web browsing, I'll just make sure to post here again if it recurs.
Oh, and I'm running Norton Internet Security 2005, sure, it's old and a performance hog, but, long story short, I've got 330 days of (accidentally) free subscription time left, and this computer is basically a stopgap until I get back to the States and get some money to build a new PC, so I'm not going to bother upgrading Norton, even if it is the cause of this only marginally disruptive problem, which I doubt, since it didn't happen on my old XP install with the same version of Norton.
...and that was a really long sentence. Good day. |

That said, no random lockups since I reinstalled IE7, at least, none yet. I've got a weeklong holiday during which I'll be travelling without the lappy, so I guess I'll just see if it craps out on me eventually when I get back.
Speaking of that holiday, the school schedule here is freakin' weird: this semester we've had 3 weeks of school, now we've got 1 week off, then 14 more weeks of uninterrupted school, followed by a week off, then one week of school, and a month long break. It's killing me, man. |

Sorry to dredge this up again, but IE locked up on me again today after a 1 week vacation. Here's the info from the error report, if that helps anyone.
