Lately I have been experimenting with various registry cleaners with mixed results and my experiences may be helpful to others.
I have used sofar Uniblue Registry Booster 2, Regcure, XPmedic, Error Nuker, Registry Patrol and RegistryFix. None of these are free. And none of these is a clear winner. They all seem to find different things.
Some remarks:
regcure flags empty registry keys, however removing those is pointless, windows puts them right back. I sent them a mail about this and got a canned response, asking me where i bought the product, despite the fact that i clearly mentioned that i was using the free evaluation version. In other words: regcure's tech support is not impressive to say the least.
XPmedics keeps flagging obsolete start menu items and they keep coming back too.
Registry Patrol is the only one of this bunch that is still flagging stuff, but the report is not easy to read and interpret.
Yesterday I downloaded the first truly free cleaner and it works like a charm!
Even after the others had given my laptop a clean bill of health, Eusing still found 225 items!!!! And looking them over, they did look like real issues, not stuff like empty registry keys or obsolete start menu items.
Sofar Eusing has my endorsement.
