Dual boot (w98 & w2k). Boot.ini lost.

Hi,

my name is Hector Almagro i wonder if someone can help. It's
an easy one:

- I installed w98. (In partition C )
- Then W2k. (In partition D )
- Then removed w98. (From partition C )
- Then re-installed w98. (In partition C )

Now, when i start the system up, automatically starts w98.
There's no dual boot (c:\boot.ini lost?)

The question: How can i re-activate the dual boot screen that
asks me which OS i want to start?.
I didn't create the repair disk from w2k.
I have another w2k machine up and running. So i think i can connect both HD to this machine and access the w2k partition
'lost'. Is any back up copy of the 'boot.ini' file?.

I'm considering of taking the '\winnt\repair' directory to the
machine that is working and create a repair disk from it. Do
you think it could work out?.

Thanks in advance. Regards,

Hector Almagro.

Welcome to TechIMO
Sorry cant remember what your Boot.ini should look like for dual boot, but if you boot your PC with the Win2k disc or 4 boot discs and do a repair this will fix it for you.

this is what a Win2k boot.ini file looks like

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

so if you add Win98 to this it should work also, erm sorry cant remember where though

you need to add i think it's c:\msdos.sys="Windows 98"

it's something like that, one of the .sys files that's in c:\windows that acts like the 98 loader...

(edit) fixed the spelling of msdos. sorry!

Here's what my boot.ini looks like (I'm using Win98 and Win2K as well) and they are loaded on the same drive letters as yours. Back up your boot.ini first, then add these lines. Hope this helps.

[boot loader]
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
timeout=4
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

** That capital "S" on the third line should be at the end of the second line = WINDOWS ** don't know why it keeps separating it.
