| Email attachments in Outlook
Last weekend, I loaded Win XP Pro and Office XP Pro on my box. I had been running Win2K and Office 2K Pro. Now, when I receive any attachments in Outlook that are .exe, .bat, .inf, .msi it blocks access. I just strips them off and won't let me receive them. If I know that I am going to be getting something from some one I have to have them zip it then send it. I looked through options but don't see any security settings to change this. TIA for you help. |

my os is 98se, with the latest IE and Outlook express
here is the options tab that you need to check.
Do not check "Do not allow attachements to be saved....."
See attached screen shot.
Also if you are running antivirus software it might be preventing you from saving files.
Good luck |

I am understanding thebeav's question a little bit different than amdkt7's answer so correct me wrong if I am not understanding correctly.
I am understanding that when you recieve an email attachment with any of the bat. inf, or msi that outlook blocks these attachments. This is very true IF you have downloaded all the updates for Office 2k pro.
I been trying to find the techical documents related to this problem in timo cause i know its been discussed before and also MS and its not being nice to me, anyhow this change in the attachment policy with MS is in the Office 2k pro update office packages.
2 ways around this problems:
1. If you are expecting the email from a friend that is a exe file have your friend change the name of the file to a .jpeg or .jpg and in the content of the email to you to tell you what file extension to change it back to. then you will be able to access your attachments.
2. uninstall office 2k pro and reinstall office and do not download the updates packages.
this was MS way of beefing up security. I will keep looking for the exact referrence I am thinking of and post back here.

You are mostly correct, but, I went from the 2k line to the XP line and that's when the issue came up. I understand that I can have the attachments renamed, but that is real inconvienent.

I don't have the option to change that in security. Here is what the options/security tab show in Outlook XP. |

Bingo, finally found it!
These should help out, It appears MS has an update that you can use to help with this problem. Seems a bit winded but keep reading. What types of files are affected? Receiving a restricted attachment
If you have anymore questions LMK and I will see what i can find, I bookedmarked these pages for future references as this question comes up fairly often.
Still can't find the old thread in Timo. :Sigh:
Hope this helps some more, it provides another solution other than what I mentioned.

Edit: it appears this update been out for a while. I am not sure if its packed in with the other updates, I will test later today by sending myself a "forbidden" attachment and test it out and see what the results are.

Yep, Office XP will not allow any attachment that can be run in the email. You will have to use the tip to turn it off. Let us know if you run into problems.
Opps, I see that the tip to turn this off is not mentioned. I will try and find it and let you know. |

Just like MS, deciding to protect you, and not allowing any way to change the option.
Love it! Once updated it can not be removed. You must uninstall Office to get rid of the patch!
You are lucky you don't have to format c: to get rid of it! |

I have read through both links from NeoStar. I'm sorry I don't see how to turn it off. It implies reloading Office 2k, but I'm not on that. |

Yea, I agree. MS, I guess feel some sort of need to protect me even when I know how to handle email. |
