Optical Drive disapears

Here is my system first off...

Intel Quad q6700
Intel DG33tl
2 X SATA 80g ( no raid)
Sata 20x burner
4 gigs of 800mhz ram
EVGA 8800GTX
Vista home Prem

Anywho most of the time my optical drive doesn't show up in device manager or even my computer thus i cannot use discs in it. I googled it and found the guide that told me to edit the registry, i followed the guide but i don't have the upper or the lower in my registry file. Anyne have another way that I can fix this.

- The drive is good
- No raid set up
- Bios shows it
- Everything is plugged in correctly

is the optical IDE or SATA?

did it work before?
try different power cable.
test with other drive if you have one.
try different sata onboard.
or switch sata cable.
