| AOL IM guzzling down my CPU?
I had a couple problems with my AIM so I decided to just bag the whole thing and reinstall it. So I go to aol.com, download 4.7, install it. Everything goes fine, except I started IMming my buddies and my typing suddenly became pretty lagged. I checked the task manager (I'm on XP) and saw that AIM.exe was using over 70% of my CPU! I Killed it off and restarted. It seemed to behave better but then it would sporadically eat my CPU time up again, and then let it go. I also noticed that this AIM.exe app takes almost 10,000k of memory sometimes?! Is anyone else noticing this?
A note: I use DeadAIM- it has never caused problems before but could it be doing it?
Maybe I should scour around for an older version- as I believe my original AIM was like v4.1 or something.

deadaim might be causing it... could be coded improperly resulting in a massive memory leak in xp... |

I opened AIM and started IMing and the CPU went up to 28% on the Aim.exe then tried with Deadaim and it didnt do anything worse.
Could you try without deadaim and see if that fixes it?
If it does just go download AIM+ (Sorry the site seems to be down now.
But AIM+ removes ads and gives you a chat history and many other things. |

My AIM is the 95 model. I burnt it off a long time ago. It only uses around 2% resources. It is working good on XP.
If you want a copy of it. LMK. It is 5 meg in size. |

Well I reinstalled AIM (Using the same current version) and it seems to be behaving itself now. RAM usage varies between 1500k and 6000k, CPU time is minimal.
Too bad that AIM+ site is down, I had it for about a day but decided to dump it because the DeadAIM window was smaller- but now that i want to play with it again it's not up!

yet another update- scratch the previous post as AIM still will steal my cpu from time to time.
Maybe this is normal and I just never noticed it before....

I am using AIM Beta 4.8.2646 in XP
Running about 6,000K memory, not even touching the processor. Never had any odd problems like you are. I'd uninstall it, run a defrag, reboot, and reinstall. Make sure you shut all your other proggies down before you install it again. |

I may have shed a little more light on the situation here:
I followed the suggestion above about running AIM isntead of DeadAIM. Well I still got those wierd times of CPU usage- but I was able to look at the AIm screen while this was happening and noticed at something strange... the ads window was flashing grey and white while AIM.exe was using the cpu heavily. After a few seconds a new ad would pop up and the cpu usage would die down. During these times- my network utilization goes above 0%, like it's transferring data.
I'll give the defrag suggestion a try, should i also delete all entries with "AIM" in the registry too?

P.S. does anyone have the AIM+ download saved on their hard drive? The site still seems to be down, and has been for the past few days. I wonder if it's ever coming back up? |

What are your comp specs? I have a dell Inspiron with AIM+ it's only running at 64k on my system under xp...that's almost nothing. AIM runs at 3,768 almost 4,000k that's still well below most things. Mabye something is going on with other software you have installed.
