Acrobat error: Cannot find External Window Handler....what is this?
I am unable to open some *.pdfs that I need to use for my class. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of acrobat many times, but to no evail.
I know there is not a problem w/ the files because I have viewed them from the machines in the labs.
Does anyone know what this error means? I went to adobe.com and searched for the term "external window handler". It came up with some hits. When I tried to click on them.....guess what....error: "Cannot find Acrobat external window handler".
How's that for irony.

:Sigh: Here I go again, I tried to post from opera but it asked me to log in again and it lost my post that I had submited.
Anyhow I was saying.....
You mentioned that you uninstalled acrobat then reinstalled it.
When you uninstalled acrobat did you also go through the registry and clean out any left over files? I generaly do this after uninstalling any applications to rid of it of every trace of the program.
Try this and then reinstall acrobat and see if it helps your problem.
this is my suggestion for now. I have ran across different apps the uninstall/reinstall doesn't work because of left over registry entries.
If this doesn't work post back.

Usually it's about web browser integration,

If that still doesn't work, I've gotten all the computers I work with to function with just saving the pdf to local computer and then opening it with Acrobat. This is, if the problem is with web browser integration.

I'm not sure whether that works since you have to login for the boards (I logged in as guest).
See the forums for 'Acrobat Reader', they usually discuss the technical problems most often encountered.Last edited by muno; May 3rd, 2002 at 01:28 AM.

But don't you have to enable Java in the Advanced section of IE?

Thanx for the links. I will try those when I get home Sunday. Maybe I'll try upgrading to the most recent IE first, then try the acrobat stuff.

I had the same problem back when I was running W98Lite. Adobe couldn't figure it out, but I finally learned that it was because I had Lotus Suite installed. As soon as I un-installed Lotus and Acrobat Reader and then re-installed Acrobat Reader, No Problem!
