| Troubles installing Win98 (VXD Error)
trying to install Win98 on a brand new 20gig Maxtor hdd. After the first restart, windows asks for the cd key. Then it will start to load drivers for any hardware, that's when it happens. I get a BSOD - fatal exeption in VXD. I have tried everything. I have taken out all of his cards, I have swapped the ram, Put in a new bios battery (I was reaching )
The system is a PII 400, 192m, 8gig WD(old), Maxtor 20gig(brand new), ASUS P2B.
I've done a lot googling on this and found nothing on this error during install.
Any Ideas?
Thanks.

I had that problem a lot on a system with heat problems. I know the PII does not get too hot but check the CPU temps and make sure the system/CPU fans are ok.
Also, does the mobo see the hard drive total size in the bios? |

have you tried preparing the drive properly (partition, format) before installation?
eweruk has a point. check also for system instability: temps, bios configuration. check also if you have a good installation CD (scratches, dirt)

Yeah the CPU temp is fine. I've gone through the bios and it's ok also. I have tried a couple different Win98 cds. Also, the bios does see the full disk size. Hey Dax, I have done a complete Fdisk and format twice now. I actually think I have got the problem. It looks like one of his 32 meg sticks have gone bad. I am noe doing another fdisk format with just his on 128m stick. I'll post back.

Have you tried copying the cab files to the hd and running setup from there?

WoooooHooooo!!!! It's up and running. I'll have to check now if it was the ram that was bad or slots. Either way, windows is installed and working great!
Thanks for the help...

proly just a bad stick. Dont worry too much. Just buy some decent kind (not generic) and you wont have to sweat about it!

Sometimes if you combine a stick of pc100 with pc133 one will not work properly, and will mess things up a bit. - Jon
