Tried to install on my computer but after a really long download, backup, and install it failed. Then came a really long uninstall. Error message told me it failed and that some updating was done and my computer might not work propoerly now. Thanx MS. It appears to be working OK though.

I did the download and installation on my home system last week. No problems.

However, I also did a clean installation of XP over the weekend with a slipstreamed disc (nLite, with SP3 and IE7) and that machine is having some issues. I'm going to try another slipstream using the Winsupersite method (does not use nLite) and try that next.

i seem to remember installing rc1 or rc2 on my daughters pc - no problems with the installation or since.

my reason for installing - i thought i'd read that rdc would be available in xp home with sp3..... turns out i dreamt about reading it......

There may be problems with AMD-based machines, especially HP desktops.

Talking
It is emblematic of just how fundamentally defective

the microsoft Operating Systwem has been from the very beging,
that it needs a service pack for its Srivice Pack 3.

And do note, that XP is reputedly the best operating system in modern times that MS has put out.

There have been estimates of what MS has cost the Economy, not just in costs for its SW, but in costs in lost time, productivity, IT problems, and crashes/bsod.

Now certainly, much of this is the users fault in poor upkeep, failure to maintain adequate cooling, and in the OEM manufacturers doing in failing to provide adequate and stable PSU in the machines they release, not to mention 5 cent fans, and the customers who seem to want a machine with a nickle profit margin for the manufacturers...

But still, not to able to get a service pack released....without it needing a service pack of its own.

same here... though it was on a fresh install of XP Home/SP2 on my upgraded AMD system, only took about 20 minutes to do the update.

however afterwards I had some issues with some .NET 1.1 & 3.0 updates along with IE7, & WMP11 updates... that wouldn't install them & failed, no matter how I updated them, via Windows Update in Windows or IE, or by going to Windows Site & initialize the update process... it would download, start installing then complete but said it failed.

I don't know if SP3 brought this on or not, but never had problems like that in the past. I managed to resolve it by searching google & tried some suggestions, one was to download an older version of the Windows Update software, force install that, Then try again. it did work, but then the update software got into an endless loop of updating itself, after each update, it would try to look for new versions, find the same version its running now & install again... eventually cancelled it, & after a few more additional reboots it was resolved somehow...

but SP3 itself installed fine & with in a reasonable amount of time, I was almost certain I'd be sitting there for the next 2 days downloading, installing, & rebooting, but I wasn't.

as to performance differences? Don't know about that... its hard to tell on that machince, since I upgraded from an AMD Athlon XP Mobile 3000+, 512MB DDR266, 10GB x 2 PATA-33, Radeon 9700 Pro, & KT600 Mobo to an AMD AM2 X2 BE 2400+, 2GB (4x 512MB) DDR2-800, 60GB PATA133, nForce 4 mobo with onboard 6100 Graphics. so its a bit hard to tell of an increase in performance due to SP3, since its such a massive hardware upgrade.

not sure if I've installed SP3 on the main game rig yet though... will have to check it, but even if I did, I doubt I'd see any real performance gain anyways...

I've got SP3 installed flawlessly on 6 of my AMD machines and they're all running great! I've installed it on a couple dozen customer's computers at work (both AMD and Intel), and haven't had a failure yet.

On another note . . . I gave in and installed SP1 on my one and only Vista machine at home and it took over 2 hours to download and finish the install. It had to re-boot 3 times to complete the install . . . but everything seems to be working fine.
