| Need help for super slow XPpro (hijack log)
Windows XPpro. I've had this probelm a long time & I can't really say what caused it. I did install System Mechanic 7 & let it make some changes. I've since had it undo all of the registry changes that it had made(as far as I know). Working on it SO time consuming. I really don't want to reinstall windows. My windows disk wont let me do a repair - it reports that the installed version is newer than the disk. I quess because of updates.
SYMPTOMS: When I move the mouse pointer over an icon on the quick launch bar, it does not immediately become highlighted. In fact (I just timed this), it took 2 minutes for the icon to become highlighted then I clicked on the icon and it took 3 minutes for the application to open.
Once an application opens it operates fine - normal speed & responsiveness.
I can end the explorer.exe process in the process window of the task manager and restart it in the application window of the task manager. Then if I quickly attempt to start an application using the quick launch bar, it is responsive.
No aplication/process seems to be tying up the processor according to the task manager. It usually shows >90% on 'system idle process'. The hard drive is not excessively busy either.
If I attempt a restart Windows reports that explorer.exe is not responding.

if it really takes THAT long, you can take an eternity to find it.
best and fastest way by far is to save your data and do a re-install.
But if you really don't want to, please post your system specs, that might give a clue as to what is going on.
PS McAfee is a huge systemhog, if you have an already slow pc in regards to specs, then that might also slow it down quite a bit

Intel D845WN with a 2Ghz PeniumIV
1G RAM
I cant get to the system manager to get the details.
ATI AGP video board
It has previously ran fine with all current software and hardware.
It's got a few years on it but speed has not been an issue - before this problem.
I highly suspect that I let System Mechanic do something that I shouldn't have.
Something in the registry. |

You can always attempt a system restore previous to System Mechanic to see if that'll take care of things. I honestly never trust any registry cleaner as, unless you know what you need to remove via registry, Windows XP and on really manages itself for the most part. If you have computer slow downs, it's best to minimize processes, startup, and system services rather than scan through the registry. Keep this in mind.
Often registry cleaning software will keep registry backup files automatically also, seeing as you can really mess something up when dealing with the registry. If System Mechanic has made backups, you can always restore it from one of those, too.
