I cleaned-up my 750 gig drive on my new Gateway 5678 and got it to a fairly clean and quick boot.
I wanted to put that image on a 160 gig drive I have that's only about a year old. So I do an image copy to a USB drive. Reboot with Acronis boot disk (after shutdown and install of 160 gigger (SATA, btw)) and install from USB image.
Disconnect 750 gigger, reboot and I get the "splash" screen and then NOTHING. No drive activity, no BSOD, no nothing! LOL. A couple of e-mails to Acronis and this is the last one I get back.
1. Does it make sense?
2. I don't have a boot disk, just the restore partition (I think, haven't checked the box completely yet):
Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.
I am afraid in this case you will really need to repair Vista Boot Configuration Data in the following way:
1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the CD\DVD disc drive, and then (re)start the computer;
2. Press a key when you are prompted;
3. Select language, time, currency, keyboard or input method, and then click Next;
4. Click Repair your computer;
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next;
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box click Command Prompt;
7. Type the following:
Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
If you want to completely rebuild Boot Configuration Data, then you should issue the following command:
Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
This command scans all disks for installations that are compatible with Windows Vista. Additionally, this option lets you select the installations that you want to add to the Boot Configuration Data store.
I really want to use the 3/4 terabyte for storage, not my main boot drive! LOL
Just checked...I have a "Gateway" disc...Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit/32-Bit with SP1 OPERATING SYSTEM DISC.
Not sure if this just the factory reinstall or will give me some options. Guess it won't hurt to put the imaged 160 gigger in and try it on that
