I'll be upgrading my work PC within the next few months.
From Win 2000 to XP, that is! |

I'm also a fan of Vista. It runs pretty smooth on my machine. UAC is a PITA, but once that was gone, it wasn't bad.
I still install XP on some machines though, just because that's what people know. It's a great OS too. Vista just looks so darn purdy! |

vista for me, just get newer chipset and drivers, the new boards should run vista pretty good,
it's the boards that come out about the same time as vista that seem to have weak support for vista,
the company's just needed time to learn the demands and driver needs of vista and build accordingly

It's just been a few months since I finally started using XP Pro on my personal machine though I've had it here for several years. I don't see that much of an improvement over Win 2k which is just as I thought it would be. I've been shuffling some hardware around and as soon as I get that settled, some distro of Linux will be going back on and I'll be using Win little if at all except for testing purposes.
. If you truly want a better OS, you're not likely to find it at M$.

.bh. | I just wish I could drag myself into that realm and actually USE a linux distro.
Honestly, I think that if a person that knows Linux physically helped another "computer literate" person learn Linux with the idea that they will in turn help someone "learn" Linux...it would spread a lot faster than it has. At this point, I know Windows, and even if new Windows come out, I can muck around and still get things done. I'm really not bilingual in any way, including OS's. |

It was lean, stable and easy to use. If people would have "read the manual" and kept it secured, it wouldn't have been made obsolete by vulnerabilities and would still be quite useful.
Windows biggest problem is not the code. It's a victim of it's own popularity and the people who don't RTFM. |

Red Fury,
Most reasonably populated areas have either PC User Groups or LUGs (yes, Linux Users Groups) where members do help noobs get started with Linux. The better ones are already very easy to install with your Windwoes crutch still in place. And once you're online, you can have a Linux old-hand at the other end of a chat who could actually be watching your screen as you were learning. But there's no help for the unmotivated.

.bh. | Well, I'm motivated enough, just don't have as much time to pick this stuff up as I used to. Perhaps I'll dive into it when winter comes along and I've got tons of free time. |
