| rh 7.3: what would YOU like me to review?
one of the comments in my redhat 7.3 inpressions thread was asking what software i've been trying? suffice it to say, other than open office, not much, since most of what i need comes with the distro.
but since i'm a valiant reviewer, for the fun of it, i'll open up the floor to the rest of you folks. what software packages would you like me to review on redhat? what do they do and what do you want to know about them? i will review them and post back here.
sound good? |

what about up2date and the rhn would you like to know?
basic usage is as follows:
* when you first install redhat, you run rhn_register as root. you type in a username, password, and email address. if you've done this before, it will link this proflie to your username on rhn. if not, you wlil go through the registration process. iregardless, you will create a profile name and then upload a package profile to redhat.
* after this, you just need to run the up2date program. it will log into rhn and tell you what packages need updating. this is good, but unlike apt-get, you have to work out the dependancy problems yourself. you select what packages you want, and it downloads and installs them. you can even update your kernel this way, it will not kill your computer like mandrake's software updater can.
right now they're limitng up2date to those who pay for access, hopefully this will end. |

>>>what id like to see is a comparison of
ease of doing an upgrade for example,
try to upgrade kde 2.* to kde3 using each of the following:
1. regular rpms
2. apt-get for mandrake, which is available
from mandrake cooker
3. up2date
4. apt in conectiva, another rpm-based distro
5. apt-get for debian
>>>also, try to do a newbie-like install
using all default options. will the newbie be successful ? assume the newbie has only a
windoze backround, and so he doesnt know how to make a root and swap partitions, or that
these partitions are even needed.
>>>next, use the interrnet connection wizard. will the newbie be able to get online without
knowing hostname, dns addresses, etc.
>>>we were ALL once such a newbie, and a distro should enable the newbie with
windoze XPerience only to be successful
if that distro wants to compete with m$. |

| NOTHING.
Tried RH 7.3, not 100% satisfied with. Sticking with Drake 8.2 - it's so much nicer.
And we know how much you are biased towards RH, right ? (j/k) |

Hey PB:
Just answering the guys question. I tried it and didnt like it. CUPS is broken (with my printer anyway), can't select Reiserfs at install time, install routine not as configurale as Drake's, etc, etc.
If it works for you, then great. Go for it. For me, Drake is the distro of choice. |
