Vista doesn't use a boot.ini file it now uses Boot Configuration Data (BCD), perhaps if you explain what you are trying to accomplish someone can give you a hand.

| when is a file not a file?
I loaded Acronis disk manager into my drive. Before I had an opportunity to reboot, I pickup or activated an Explorer virus. All said, when I rebooted later, I was face to face with Acronis Disk Manager. I had not initialized the program so I was surprised, but it runs through the boot sequence then stops before the first gui. I end up with a black screen and a working [moviable] mouse, nothing else. I have gotten to the stage where it states the name of the operating system [Ancrois is for multi-boot system >>> I only have vista ultimate on right now] , the disk number and partition and part of the old boot.ini text. The last bit, like "noexecute=optin". >>>> I realize there maybe many worth while suggestions on repair, however I'd like to try inserting the text from the Boot.ini tab of msconfig. I realize from reading, that there isn't a boot.ini file anymore. Still, in msconfig / boot ini tab, you will find text. I need it.[maybe] [gota try] |

Don't quote me on this but I believe the text looks something like this Quote:
Windows Boot Loader
-------------------
Identifier: {current}
Type: 10200003
Device: partition=C:
Path: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
Description: Microsoft Windows
Locale: en-US
Inherit options: {bootloadersettings}
Boot debugger: No
Windows device: partition=C:
Windows root: \Windows
Resume application: {224b014c-a08e-11da-b308-ed83a3b7e795}
No Execute policy: OptIn
| Since it sounds like you can't actually log into vista then I don't see where having the text is going to help. It sounds like you'll need to repair your BCD info. You could try VistaBootPRO - Go PRO with Microsoft Windows Vista Boot Manager or How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows Vista
1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the CD\DVD disc drive, and then (re)start the computer;
2. Press a key when you are prompted;
3. Select language, time, currency, keyboard or input method, and then click Next;
4. Click Repair your computer;
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next;
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box click Command Prompt;
7. Type the following:
Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
If you want to completely rebuild Boot Configuration Data, then you should issue the following command:
Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
This command scans all disks for installations that are compatible with Windows Vista. Additionally, this option lets you select the installations that you want to add to the Boot Configuration Data store. |
