Installing Windows 98 from 95

Im having problems installing Win98 on an a computer without an OS...i turn the computer on it trys to load windows 95 (which im guessing was on it before i got it) but then it goes back to the black screen saying the file vmm32.xvd is missing you may have to reinstall windows...

so eventally i find an setup disk an its Windows 98 so i put it in the drive an rebot the computer but it doesnt load the setup disk in the cd drive

THINKS YOU NEED TO KNOW

• I dont know what letter the cd-rom drive is
• When the computer boots it says the cd drive is there an installed
• I dont have a floopy boot disk i thought you can just run it from the cd

It has an OS on it (Win95). Can you wipe the disk?

Bootdisk.Com will allow you to download the files needed to create a boot floppy. You have to watch the bootup process to see what the cd drive letter is.

I would then copy the entire Win98 folder off the cd to the hard drive and lauch the install from there.

DOS needs a driver and other software to read from a CD drive, it doesn't by default, so if you just have a plain DOS disk without a CD driver that might be the problem. Usually the default drive letter for a CD is D:, if you only have one hard drive or partition that the OS can recognize.

The windows 98 CD, if it's an original or has been burned as bootable, will boot to the install or to DOS with CD support if you choose, but you have to make sure the system's boot order is set to boot to the CD before the hard drive or it will disregard the CD.

Do you know how to get into the CMOS setup? If you're lucky it'll tell you what key to press right after you power on the computer, but it's usually Delete or F11, maybe one of the other F keys.

Once you're there, look for 'boot order' or something like that, and set the hard drive to be below the CD drive.
