need help configuring samba
I am using mandrake 8.2 on a box and have a linksys dsl/cable router with a win 2k box connected. Have been succesful with getting printer to work on win 2k machine. I can see the linux box in network nieghborhood but am not able to connect to read or write to drives. This is my first time with this samba but would very much like to see this work. any replies appreciated.

I can mount network drives no problem without editing the samba configuration file. Just asks me for the password for the XP box.
mount -t smbfs //computer/sharedfolder /mountpoint
example:
mount -t smbfs //Mcdonald/My\ Music /windows2
where Mcdonald is the name of the computer on the netowrk
and My Music is the shared folder name, the \ is to allow a space.
That should do it for ya I hope.

I found the man pages to be very helpful. Not sure which disk it's on with the mandrake distro, but everything I needed to know was there. You may want to checkout Linux Newbie also. Lots of good stuff.

AFAIK, you only need to mess with the configuration file if you are going to SHARE a drive, ie a linux drive that can be accessed in windows.

swat -easiest way I know.
just remember that in Linux you do have to mount the shares in order to write to them -check out also man smbmountLast edited by CMonster; May 21st, 2002 at 04:10 AM.
