Hm. Won't install on an Abit IL8. It sees the hard drive, formats it, but says it can not boot from it. I know this to be untrue because I accidentally booted Ubuntu on another hard drive an hour ago.

DVD Burning Problems Resolved
I have resolved my burning coaster problem, it seems that the ISO attributes after downloaded was set to archive, once I unchecked that box I was able to burn a DVD successfully. Now to figure out where to install it, Virtual Box, spare hard drive on my laptop or dual boot on one of my PCs.
I will give one of them a shot tonight.

IDK memory usage is almost double Vista ultimate for me at least. How about everyone else? What are your memory usages looking like?

Nope, using less here. Also seemed to give me a bit better battery life on my laptop.

I uninstalled the drivers from ATIs website and used Windows Update to install the drivers for my Express 200m. I was able to watch videos and do 3d stuff without blue screening, but when I ran the Windows Performance index tool, my laptop bluescreened when it got to the direct 3d tests. The blue screen said it was my video driver that caused the system to crash.
It looks like they still need to work on the drivers for older cards.
Another thing, its been a long time since I have used my gateway laptop as a full use. It has a Sempron 3100+ (1.8ghz) and a Radeon Xpress 200m (64mb dedicated ram, 348 shared memory) but it plays the high definition videos on hulu very choppy. It also struggles to play the high quality (480p) content on hulu as well, although a lot smoother than the 720p HD content.
Does anyone know if a Sempron 3100+ is fast enough for HD video? Like I said, its been a long time since this was my main laptop, so I can't remember how well it played videos before.

Seems just like Vista to me. Tried to dual boot WinXp with it, after it would not boot Xp just Win7. Didnt know about Easy BCD

Reinstalled Win Vista Ultimate, did a Wubi install of Ububtu and had a good dual boot. That is until I installed x64 service pack 1. Then it would not let me chose the option to boot Ubuntu.
So I deleted Ubuntu and installed Win 7, and again have a dual boot system.

I was complaing about RAM usage a couple of pages back 2.
It does seem to use more RAM then Vista IMO, but it sure seems snappier to me, so I'm good with it. Vista on the other hand on my PC eats RAM like fat kids eat cake, but I see no performance increase with it.

January 14th, 2009, 06:53 PM #92It's true, but I suppose the problem I have is: is this windows vista SE, or service pack 2, or are we as consumers really supposed to believe that this is some sort of worthwhile stand alone project.Don't you guys realize it IS Vista?
Though in Using 7 I must say that I am impressed at how I did not have to install any drivers for anything except my keyboard (it worked, but I needed drivers for specific function key, ironically enough a microsoft keyboard). I have only run game so far, GRAW 2, but it runs perfectly fine. The only issue I have come up against is the sleep function (which took me a while to get working on vista) and I have had the system hang at boot.Reason obeys itself; and ignorance does whatever is dictated to it.

It isn't any different than 2000->XP or 95->98 was.

Yep, it's Vista. And Bill Gates is going to be laughing his billion dollar self all the way to the bank when it comes out and "oh, this is the BEST Windows ever!!!".
I have no problems with Vista as it came out EXCEPT the packaging bullshit. Could have just made it like XP and had Home and Premium (or Ultimate). Other than that, I've been running it on every machine I have and I have NEVER had one conflict, BSOD, incompatibility or any type of problem (and a couple of boxes run 24x7).
Anyone get a vibe for how much Windows 7 is going to be? I stated in an earlier post that I thought around the $200 mark. Too much for me, but Big Bill will do what he did with Vista; give the kickbacks to the manufacturer's and have them put out all new machines with Windows 7.
I, for one, will be sitting back and watching the fun!
Addendum:
Where MS is really losing out is in the Corporate market. I know that where I work, we're still all XP. Why? Because Corporations have a ton of applications that are mission critical to their business and if they don't run on a Vista test suite of machines/users, that company is NOT goint to Vista. I'm willing to bet Windows 7 is a bit scaled back and may be more geared to fit both the home consumer and business market. I hope it works
I'm not ready to go Mac just yet! ROFL

The packaging of XP was horrible. The packaging for Vista is very simple to understand and much more flexible to get everything you need. Home Basic -> Basic Home users, Home Premium -> Normal Home users, Business -> Business, Ultimate -> really no reason for this (unless for some reason you want both the business and home features, which nobody should need). Pretty simple eh?
It'll cost the same as every other Windows release, whoever said $200 is just pulling numbers from thin air."The problem with quotations on the internet is that the sources are hard to verify" - Abraham Lincoln

Awww, come on Ex; have you looked at the charts that show the differences. One gives you photo stuff, one doesn't. One gives you this, the other doesn't. Could have EASILY been rolled into one package or two. Who says a Home Basic user doesn't need Remote Desktop

Need it all? Vista Ultimate. There is your ONE package.

Well, I get to the screen that says that it is for testing purposes only after the splash screen when installing. It freezes up on me there. Have tried a couple of different iso files and tried it without anything except the bare essentials hooked up, no luck.

It has taken up to 15 minutes for the screen to pass for me, cunokyle, but it's never frozen. Maybe try waiting longer if you haven't already.
From what I understand, 7 _isn't_ just Vista with a new skin. It's quite similar, but some of the core has been changed to better facilitate things that needed better facilities. That could, of course, just be hot air and heresay.
I have gotten a couple of random other errors. mIRC and Trillian work fine, for instance, but when I close them, it tells me a certain .dll is missing. I may have mentioned this previously.
As for memory usage, as of the fourth of fifth install I've done now, it's either spot on with Vista (while running multiple apps) or a bit lower (bare start up). If you are having memory issues, perhaps it's something else on the system not agreeing with it?
Finally got ClearType turned off. Man does that crap annoy me.
