| Hard Drive trashing in Vista - I tried everything!
Hi,
The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. When it's really quiet I can hear it too, it's constantly writing. Constantly.
I have read all the threads on the net and so far I have disabled:
Windows index
Windows defender
Windows search
Superfetch
System Restore
Readyboost
Defragmenter
I have uninstalled google desktop.
All Vista updates are installed.
Nothing has helped.
What now??? Please help!!! |

What anti virus you using?
I know that AVAST writes the "Virus Recovery Database" when there is no one using the PC.

McAfee. It's not scanning though - scheduled scanning is disabled.
And this happens 24/7, whether I'm using the laptop or not. |

Interesting post,
The Computer is connected by the enclosure through a universal serial bus or Fire wire port, making it a plug-and-play device. When the system is up and running it can be turned Off and On. Security is one of the main advantages to use an external hard drive enclosure. Online threats including viruses, Trojan Horses, Spyware, Hacking, poorly written software and hateful script is the major concern for many people. Some threats can expose data to outside sources, while others corrupt it. But i think u can try using the Kaspersky Antivirus. It is the best service which protects your computer against security threats like viruses and spyware. |

@Jack: the system is virus-free - trust me on this. I'm not a super-techie but I've been online since 95, I know how to handle virus protection. |

So I have installed Ubuntu (Linux) on a partition as a test, under Ubuntu the computer is perfectly silent.
So it is indeed a Vista "feature" that has my HD spinning 24/7 and writing with a constant, distracting humming noise, even when I'm just reading online. My new high-end Sony is noisier than my 4-years-old low-end Toshiba under XP. Unbelievable.
I guess I'm going to install XP soon. |
