I run a small office and have been using XP home & XP pro on FAT32 on several computers without any problem in renaming files (files with very long names either in English or Chines or both).
Recently I bought an ACER Aspire One preloaded with XP home and formatted NFTS. (I tried to boot from USB drive following varrious methods recommended by various people on the net, and then reformat the HD as FAT - after two days, I gave up and began to load files to the new computer on NTFS - but this is a different issue).
The problem I have now is - although I have all the previleges as an adminstrator, I cannot rename files the way I liked with FAT. I was told I have no access previlege to the file, or the file is being used. I know clearly I am the only person using the Aspire One, and have checked no other software is using the file. I am using AVG8.5 antivirus and have not yet been surfing on the net yet other than downloading the AVG8.5. Checked with AVG, no virus.
But then I discover a strange thing - if I go to the the Properties of the file and click Advanced under Attributes (the two boxes under Archive & Index Attributes are already checked), without changing anything and back out from Properties, then I can rename that particular file. I repeat this trick on other files in other folders, yes, no problem in renaming them.
I've read that renaming files is equivalent to deleting files. Although I cannot rename the files on the Acer Aspire One, I can delete them. This puzzles me further.
Isn't this a troublesome and long way to rename a file? Something must have gone wrong. Please help.
