I got my copy two weeks ago right from Redmond with 10 user licenses.
I have Ultimate running on my laptop, and home pc, but not my work pc. For some reason I can't get my bluetooth mouse to work, and Microsoft wont help because it's an oem. And I can't go back to anything less!
I love 7 though! |

I preordered from Newegg months ago, got my copy on Thursday. But I've got a real problem: It's the Upgrade edition, and although I have a legal copy of Win XP, it needs to be installed and activated before I can upgrade -- and the hard drive on my computer is SATA, which the Win XP install disk doesn't recognize!
What do I do?

Why doesn't the WinXP disk recognize it? All my drives are SATA, and I've never had the problem.
Is it pre SP2? (does that even make a difference)
If you need a SP2 disk, I may be able to help you. |

Theo I'd try running a clean install as is since there is no upgrade path from XP it deletes all those old files anyways. From what I've heard you should be able to run the custom install and it work w/o issues. The only problem you might run into is with activation, but here is a work around http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/cle...rade_media.asp

Actually, I've got a slipstreamed SP3 install disk as well as an SP2 one. I had an OEM SP2 install for Marcia's build, but I can't seem to find it.
What happens is that when I get to the stage where I'd establish a boot partition, the installation gives me a list of four partitions, all of which it calls something like "unknown type", and doesn't allow me to select any of them, either to delete, overwrite or anything. This is true with both slipstreamed disks plus two different original disks without any service packs. |

However, I'm willing to try the workaround.
Perhaps the problem is that I currently have the Win 7 RC on the machine, as well as Ubuntu Linux? Is Grub screwing things up? Should I just reformat the drive first? |

Hmm.. well if GRUB is on there, then that means your MBR isn't set properly, and that could be causing your issue. |

If you want a copy of the retail Windows 7 disk I can get one for you. The keys are interchangeable. |

I have a copy of WD's Data Lifeguard Tools, including disk installation, and the drive is a 1TB Caviar Green. I don't mind wiping everything out as it's only been a test bed for the release candidate, and I'll be installing the latest version of Ubuntu at the end of the month anyway.
