Are Macros Proprietary

A friend of mine wrote a spreadsheet for work on his off time using Excel. There are 120 pages of macros that he wrote which covers hundreds of other spreadsheets (different formulas...etc). He is being redundant, but he is the only one that knows how the macros work, and how to change them if needed. I realize that Excel is owned by MS, but how about the 120 pages of Macros that he wrote? If he is being made redundant can he delete all the macros, and screw them, and or can he sell them to the company?

Go Yanks!!!

It depends on the wording of his contract, as it would be covered by "intellectual property". Intellectual property - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Where it gets complicated is where they have done this in their own time, so make sure that the wording of the contract is checked properly....

Without knowing the wording of the contract, it could be viewed as being his 'intellectual property' or the company's: if it is his, then he might be able to sell it to the company; if it is the company's property, then he can't do anything with it - and IDK whether your friend would be able to 'get away' with deleting data from the company's spreadsheets, as they would/could be seen as being separate to the macros in the first place........
