| Excel password changed.....
Hi,
I'm sure that this is a simple one, but for some reason my Excel has decided to change (one of) the passwords for one of my files...
The Excel file in question was originally created (in Office XP) before I had my domain (at home) in place, so I set it up to have one password to access it, and another to edit it.
Over the last couple of years, since implementing the domain infrastructure, I have changed to using Office (and thereby Excel) 2007, and was fine doing the editing and so on with the domain permissions, only having to put the first ('access') password in and it would open and I could update [and save] it without an issue.
Recently, I wanted to create an additional sheet/tab into the file, but that isn't possible as the "insert" option is greyed out when I right click a tab/sheet.
I've just tried going into it with a computer that only has "Office XP" installed, but it only asked for the 'access' password when I open it, and it wouldn't accept the password I know is the one I set it up with - and I've also tried with/without the CAPS lock on and also any other passwords that it could potentially be - but all to no avail....
I'm not too bothered about copying and pasting all of the contents of each sheet into a new file, but it would be handy if there was some way of 'cracking' the password to enable me to get past this - as I'm sure it would be quicker, and also much less likely to cause the (numerous) formulae to get all messed up.........

Just a thought... Have you tried to open it in Open Office?

No, hadn't thought about that... I'll give it a try from one of my Ubuntu boxes later...
(BTW, I did do a Google search, but the results were pointing to random software that I hadn't heard of...) |

Okay, just tried that in OO on my UNIX2 box, and while it is also able to open it, and I can now see that the "Protect -> Document" box is ticked, it still isn't accepting the password I had originally set it up with - or even any of the other alternative passwords that I've used in the last three years either... |

I'm sure I tried doing a "Paste Special" into a new spreadsheet, but that seemed to make Excel hang, or just make cell "A1" contain stuff... (Been a week or two since I tried it, so I'm going from memory) |
