| New Computer wont recognize XP disc
Hello everyone,
I recently built a new computer and everything works great. I set up BIOS and start loading XP on my computer. The install stopped me and asked me to put in a full version of windows even though the disc I put in there is the full version. I bought the disc through my college and it has an activation key and everything. Is anyone familiar with what to do?
Thanks,
Matt |

If I'm not mistaken a full version is a version that you paid full price for.
Not an OEM or an Educational version.
Don't know why the Ed version won't work though.
Edit: At what point does it ask?

It asks me right after I go through the user agreement and press F8 to confirm with user agreement. |

If it is an upgrade version (student versions come in both) It will ask for the previous Windows disc to be put in the CD for identification, then the installation continues as normal.
Edit; This says student upgrades don't check, previous versions of windows. xp pro vs. xp student edition
Also all versions of XP are full as far as the program goes, normally an XP upgrade only checks for a previous version, but then performs a clean install, of the full program.

No idea.
As I said, the retail upgrade version dose not require the old program to be installed prior to installation of the upgrade. Maybe they have changed this to "installed program".
If your program is not asking for the old disc, that won't work
If the upgrade is PRO maybe, but if it is home, you friends disc is Pro, and that won't be an upgrade.
If the first version in your computer is not validated, it might not work.
You can't validate your friends copy it your computer, because it was validated in his or hers.
Your post isn't very old yet, maybe another member knows more than me.

If you have win 98, Win98se, or ME, try that, they don't need to be validated. |
