Can I stop messenger from starting every time I go to hotmail?

I downloaded MSN Messenger the other only to be able to talk to some friends that live in Australia. For some reason they dont use AIM or ICQ so I downloaded it especially for them

Anyway, I made it so it doesn't start automatically when windows starts but I also dont want it to be starting up every time I check my hotmail account. Is there a reg key that'll make it off all the time UNLESS I start it? I tried unloading some stuff from the processes bar in the task manager (I have Win2k) but maybe I unloaded the wrong ones

If there is a way I'd like to know!
