    Exclamation Lost Password - Win7

My wife just bought her first new PC - Compaq/HP laptop. Looks to be a fairly good machine.

The big problem is that she set a login password (had to make it long and difficult) and now she isn't able to remember what it was.

Is there a fast way to recover this information? No she didn't make a password recovery disk (is kicking her self on this).

Would the restore to original/Factory be the fastest way to get back into the machine?

I need help asap or there ain't going to be any peace in this till it is corrected.

there will be one once she can log in again.

The tool I always use, Offline NT Password & Registry Editor I haven't used it on W7 so YMMV

    ^^^ That's a great tool.

The best way to use it is to blank the Administrator pwd. You can reset the User pwds using the Admin account. Be sure to set a new Admin password.

She finally got it fixed after a call to the Compaq help line. They had her do the restore to factory condition (reload of all software).

It was a very tense time until she got that restore running. (kept away from where she was sitting). A new password was created, but nothing like what she had the first time - Thank GOD. :-)

Compaq called back about one hour after she got things going and supposed to call again tonight to make sure it ain't messed up again. ;-)

She had already completed the restore by the time I had read the replies. I plan on getting it just in case it happens again (which it will)

Yes NT offline is a superb software that can come in very handy, and for those interested yes it does work in win 7 from my experience.

I had this problem several years ago with a compaq desktop. If you are referring to the optional password that is entered before your windows password, call Compaq. There is a "back door" to reset the password that uses a series of keystrokes to let you into the computer. Each type of computer has it's own set of keystrokes. I hope this information isn't too old. I finally got to the point that I wouldn't let anyone purchase compaqs at work. FORBIDDEN! If one tech says they don't know anything about how to bypass the password, hang up and call again or ask for another tech. They are not all created equal.

Had it been the BIOS password, an OS restore wouldn't have fixed the problem.

    But thanks for the suggestion.

It can't recover a password, but it lets you reset the password.
