In my program list and add/remove program list I have adobe acrobat 5 and adobe reader 6.0.1
Do I need them both? Can I remove reader 5 without interfering with any software I installed? Thanks |

if its just the versions that Read PDF files... and not create them, get rid of both and use FoxIt Reader, loads PDF files faster, and doesn't have the annoying Adobe Process that constantly runs in background checking for updates all the time. Foxit Software - Foxit Reader 3.0 for Windows

Amen to that... Adobe reader is worse than AOL and Norton combined... |

Well, I installed two programs that said acrobat needs to be installed to use the program. One is NERO for playing and burning CD's and DVD's. The other is a Yamaha synthesizer (music keyboard) sequencer and voice editor. If I uninstall acrobat and install foxit will those programs still work right? |

I can't think of a reason why either program would require Acrobat Specifically, way back when Acrobat came out, and the PDF file format start to come on the scene, Adobe had just about the only program to read them, but now there are multiple other programs like Foxit that can do that too, and much faster.
I've loaded 15-20MB PDF files before with Foxit, and took only a fraction of the time it would have had I tried using Acrobat reader.
i also like how for example Foxit can combine/integrate itself with Firefox on other browsers much more efficiently and faster than Acrobat Reader can. |

I think the Foxit sounds good too. Like Shyguy said, once you have a pdf reader, you'll be fine. most programs "recommend" adobe, but it's not normally the required "brand" of reader.
If you decide to do "adobe" for the reader, dig up version 7. If you have XP anyway. (not sure if it works on 7)
it's the last "good one" before they added all the bloat and additional phone home junk.
Plus it works with all the "fill in the blank", .pdf's.

Foxit Software - Foxit Reader 3.0 for Windows | I uninstalled acrobat 5 leaving adobe reader 6 there. I installed foxit (latest version I think). When I try to view the manual for the Yamaha software I get a message--Foxit reader file linked to missing export WINSPOOLDRV:Get Printer Data ExW.
I get that message when I try to open foxit from the desktop also.
This Yamaha software is maybe 9 yrs. old and it might not work with newer systems so maybe I need the acrobat 5 that comes with the CD ROM install disc. I found the earlier versions of foxit download but when I go to the download page it only offers the latest version. The same happened when I went to the download page for acrobat 5. Only the latest version was shownThe adobe ver. 6 reader is still installed but that evidently doesn't open it either.I guess I'll have to run the Yamaha install disc again.
I think I saw that you need at least windows 2000 for the latest version of foxit.
