Windows patch cripples XP
Oh the joys of owning computers:
The problem is caused by KB977165, see Restart issues after installing MS10-015. It's not universal, but some users do report problems.
Here is how to fix:
- Boot from your Windows XP CD and start the recovery console.
- You may need to press F6 while the Recovery Console loads in order to load SATA drivers; these can be found on your motherboard CD (or downloaded from the manufacturer web site).
- If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
- When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
- Type: CD $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst (press ENTER)
- Type: BATCH spuninst.txt (press ENTER)
- Type: exit (press ENTER)
Here's some other articles you may need/want to read:
Installing Windows XP Recovery Console. This installs the RC on your computer, so you have it always available as a boot option.
