| Mandrake 8.2 rpm package manager help
Hi everyone, I recently installed Madrake 8.2 on a PC and I wanted to change the source from wich the package manager finds the files. By default Mandrake uses the cdrom drive drive from which it installed. But right now I it to look on the second drive /mnt/cdrom2. I tried adding this as a "source" but it just gives an error when it tries to add this source. How do I have to fill the windows that appears when I want to add a source, the name field, the mnt point field, and another which I don't really remember. I need help please I want to install Tuxracer but it has alot of dependencies and I really don't in which cd these files are, that's why I need to use the rpm package maneger, anyway thanks |

not sure about changing it, but you could always use Kpackage to find the dependencies, then find the RPM on the CD using the grep command, and rpm -Uvh package.rpm to install them.
Also, just a quick question, when you are changing the source in kpackage, are you logged in as root? I would imagine that would be a root only privilage. What error are you getting when you change it also? |

hmm, i know tuxracer comes with 8.1 and 8.2 if you install the packages at install time. have you tried running "rpmdrake" as root? enter tuxracer in the box for what you want installed and it will prompt you for whatever cd's it needs for dependencies. hope this helps.

That isnt the problem wille, the problem now is that he wants to install off of Cdrom2, and the package manager is prompting for Cdrom1. Tuxracer will also only install if you select the games package on the mandrake install. |

Thanks for the help everyone, I know that I can install Tuxracer when I install Mandrake but the drive from which I do the installation doesn't read that part of the cd, it just hangs there. I've had that problem with that drive so that's why I didn't install tuxracer from the beginning and waited until now. Maybe you're asking then why doesn't he boots from the second drive. Well the answer is that my second drive is a scsi cd-burner so my bios doesn't let me boot from it. Anyway, I'll try the suggestions that you guys gave me. Will keep you posted. Hasn't anyone done this, I know it must be simple but as a newbie this kind of things happen .Thanks for the help everyone |

well you may actually have more luck using urpmi since it will go and look in its rpm database and resolve/install all dependencies for any rpm package you want to install. when you install it builds its rpm database from the install cds and i don't like having to keep them around so what i do after i install is make a /rpm directory and copy the rpms from all cds into /rpm.
once that's done run urpmi.update and you'll see the cd names that it uses to pull the rpms from. once the list is up there you know the exact names of the cds that you need to remove from the urpmi database so you can then run urpmi.removemedia "and the first cd name surrounded by quotes like this" and let it remove that as a source. do that for each cd name that urpmi.update gives you until you can run urpmi.update and it tells you that there are no sources.
at this point you can add your own /rpm source that you created. run urpmi.addmedia install_cd removable_cdrom_1://rpm and it will go through and create a new hdlist based on the contents of /rpm and once it's finished you'll be able to run urpmi whatever.rpm and install any package ... any dependencies any packages need will be resolved by urpmi and you'll never need the cd's anymore. one thing to keep in mind, though, is if you ever download any more rpms or updates to rpms that you have in /rpm you'll need to run urpmi.update install_cd to rebuild the hdlist.
cheers,
-Z |

yeah i remember i had the same problem after i changed a setting in lilo.conf. it then looked for my cdrw instead of my cd-r for packages. i only messed with lilo to get it to recognize my cd-r in xcdroast which ended up being pointless actually. from then on i never used 2 cdroms in linux really from cd to cd copy. pbharris had my back with that.

Look for rpmdrake.
When it launches, it offers a button for define sources, allows ftp, other disks, directories, etc. |
