How much Virtual Memory for XP?

I just popped in another 256mbs of ddr bringing my system to 512mbs (will continue to have this for another 3+ weeks when I will put one of the 256 modules into a new PC). My question though is how much virtual memory should I have right now?

For below 256 the rule of thumb is double your memory, 256 is 256, but I've forgotten what you should set it to above 256. Any one know off the top of your head? I was looking at google and one article said you can try none (though I know this to be bad idea), and one said 1Gb. Any ideas?

Generally speaking, if your have 512 or more, a 256 MB pagefile should be fine.

I have 512mb of ram and I lowered my page file to 256. XP kept complaining that it was running out of memory.

I forgot. I actually have two 256 MB pagefiles on two different volumes on a separate hard drive. Ideally, place your pagefile(s) on a separate hard drive, or a different partition if you only have one drive.

Only have one, but I guess I'm leaving it at 512 as like Epyon said XP didn't like 256. Thanks!
