| Most popular window manager
Being new in Linux I am enjoying learning about the different window managers. I started on KDE and still use it primarily, but am starting to favor enlightenment since it is so different from the windows look and feel of KDE. It's why we use Linux in the first place right -to get away from windoze? So I wonder what the most popular WM is? Post yours and state why you feel it's the best for you.
I'll say Enlightenment is mine for now. I like the different look and feel to it. I actually DO use the virtual desktops in it ( hardly ever did in KDE ) and for some reason the sounds in certain games under KDE doesn't work, but do in enlightenment. I dont know if I can make a desktop icons (for drives, folders, etc) in Enlightenment yet, which I want to and if I can't than that would be a minus for this WM. So what about anyone else. |

I think KDE is the most popular.
As for me, I too use KDE but then agian, I'm a noob.
Hint of advice, avoid GNOME, It's horribly buggy. |

Personally I prefer Fluxbox. It is an extnesion of the Blackbox project.
It is very light weight, and very fast. Quite similar to enlightenment AFAIK.
You cannot put any desktop icons on it though.
I agree that KDE is the most popular. It is used by most people and allows for a nice easy transition, *but* it is heavier on the resources
Gnome is heavier than KDE even. Never used it for that very reason so no real comment there

Why is GNOME so intensive? It's not any more powerful than KDE. |

Sorry I can't resist, but KDE is not a window manager, neither Gnome is. They are desktop environments within which a window manager works (kwin for KDE and sawfish or other for Gnome). Just to set the record straight
As for what I use, it's kde cause it's easy Enlightment looks nice but I really like the functionallity of KDE. It does look similar to windows but who cares? Functionallity cannot be trademarked. |

hehe otheos, had to come in here and regulate
I agree that you should not choose a window manager based on "if it looks like windows"
Choose which one works best for you and provides what you need.
You need speed and simplicity? Maybe something a bit more sleek?
Choose something along the IceWM, Fluxbox, etc.. line
Need Uber functionality? a control panel? Desktop Icons? Head the way of KDE, Gnome, etc...
Just my thoughts. Every WM or desktop environment :-P has its merits. Thats the beauty of linux. You choose what works best for you

frankly i do use kde beacuse it's close enough to windows that it makes linux a little more user friendly, which it sorely lacks sometimes. it runs chipper enough on my p3-600, though i woudln't mind getting hold of otheos' iso images for athlon when i build my new box. |

ximian gnome looks nice IMO if you have RAM to burn. KDE3 looks like it has some nice features, I really don't like 2.2 at all.
