    Back to Building

Well, it's time for me to get back into system building. I've been absent the hobby too long. I'm going to have to rebuild my toolbox, for the old one is...well, old. I do know I'll need the following, as I have six systems to build in queue already, though these are all just software builds. Hardware builds after I polish up the software technique.

For A/V I'm going ESET, these six systems will be Windows 7, probably all 32-bit installs.

But, for the real tools: I need to create a recovery partition. These systems will be in the hands of users who have already seen at least two of their previous systems pretty much destroyed by malware. I can obtain some payware for this, but I would like to inquire the crowd here about any GPL software that will image the OS partition and deploy it to a recovery partition and allow me to modify the boot in order to have that as a bootable option.

I'll be searching myself later today, but wanted to check in here first.

I am also seeking a method for tracking in case of theft. Several of these systems are very low-cost netbooks, so something as expensive as LowJack is not a very good option for them. I'm pondering using a keylogging software. I'll need to have it setup to email the logs automatically and in the background, as well as the ability to disable it on boot with a secret keypress. The hurdle I see moving forward with this is the ability to ensure whatever malware protection software is installed can be told to forever ignore that particular application execution as keyloggers are detected as malware in every AV program I have used recently. I have not done this with ESET yet as I have not used a keylogger since before I switched my preferred AV to ESET.

Any other ideas for a "beacon" would be greatly appreciated.
