windows vista - hard drive

I have a 2 HP laptops which the internal hard drive failed -so I bought a new external hard drive, reloaded the software for vista from recovery disks and tried to reboot, and get nothing on one but a blinking cursor and the other almsot get to the welcome screen and and it restarts what is going on?

Keep in mind that "IF" you can get it to boot - it'll be realllll realllll slowwwwww since runing off a USB dive isn't close to being as fast as an internal drive.

And hopefully you aren't going to drive the drive on the other machine. THe two machines would have to be identical due to driver issues.
