I can personally tell you that I have never installed any updates, run good anti-virus software and a firewall and have had no issues once so ever. I think sometimes the updates themselves cause more trouble then they are worth. If your using XP just install SP3.
I kill the updates service in Windows and turn off automatic updates. In fact, all software should have auto update off and allow for manul updates so it doesn't interfere with anything. Some people may say otherwise though.

LOL at Tax - SP's are updates all rolled into a single package, so you install them just by the sheer fact you install an SP. You might not install the incremental ones that come out now but you've installed all the previous. And while I agree some hotfixes can be bad not installing some updates like security updates can be a bad idea.
I don't know about an "article" but there are different types and reasons for updates. Security updates are critical for obvious reasons, patches and hotfixes are more about functionality. Google might turn up something more definitive.

Security updates are BS. Never patched once and have had no problem. Run Avira and Comodo.

It depends on who you are, the type of sites you visit ect. I can run an un patched version of any software and no AV forever and never be infected. Does that mean that everyone else is the same, HELL NO. I'm not visiting hi risk sites or doing anything that would warrant me having to worry.
Not applying security updates is bad practice. They ACTUALLY patch some holes in the software.
