XP Pro SP3 breaks Windows Update

Hello all, I tried searching, but could not find this specific problem. I have an Aspire One netbook which I just wiped and reinstalled XP Pro on. Immediately after the install, I installed SP3 with the redistributable that I keep on hand just for such purposes. Now, when I go to Windows Update, it tells me I need SP3 before I can proceed. Thinking the SP3 install somehow got borked, I ran it again but still get the same result from Windows Update. For what it's worth, This is the kb article I get redirected to. And, in case anyone is wondering, my copy of XP Pro is 100% legit. I may end up wiping the darn thing again and starting all over, but before doing so, I figured it couldn't hurt to see if anyone had any other suggestions.

    Thanks for any guidance!

I'd start over and NOT use your SP3 file

Fair enough. I've used it multiple times before, but files can certainly get corrupted.

Apparently there might be a new glitch with the update site. I've seen another guy with a similar issue... Let us know if you get this resolved.

Interesting. This is a low priority at the moment, so I'm not sure when I'll be looking at it again, but I'll report back with any new info.

I've also had this...I managed to get into the updates site last week but when I reinstalled my windows xp due to a crash but now I can't even get into the updates.

I know with all this hacking that is going around at the moment that it could be possible the updates site could have been hacked but like I said before I managed to get into once last week, and now I just get redirected to this website

You may be unable to access the Windows Update website from Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 if those versions of Windows are not updated to the latest Service Pack.

Anyone else know what's going on.
    Thanks

Yep, just did a couple of clean installs with service pack1, and Microsoft says, Windows update is no longer available, for anything but service pack 3 for XP.

It also said Automatic Updates must be turned on, but I haven't verified this for manual updates.

I had to down load service pack 1a, 2, and 3, from another Microsoft sight, and run them myself. (The warning has links)

After that, Windows Update worked normally, but I have auto update turned on.

I believe this just took effect, a couple of weeks ago.

I burned 1a, 2, and 3 to disk, so I won't have to go through this again.

MS has to be having some issues... Have seen several people with this delima... Some have reports that it simply disappear after a while and they could get updates.

I just turned off automatic updates, and manual update still worked, so that doesn't appear to be the problem.
