    changing file permissions

When trying to change permissions on a directory as Root, I type the command:

    "chmod 777 [directory_name]"

This does not change the permissions on the directory. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
What could be causing this? I thought that Root could do everything.

    Thanks in advance.

    chmod 0777 directory_name

That gives the whole world full access to that directory.

If you aren't the owner of the directory and the permissions are 700 then you shouldn't be able to change the permissions. Unless you take ownership of the dir with 'chown'.
I recall linux being strict about those.

chmodding a dir has always worked for me, though I set the perms of dir to 711 rather than 777.

But that's my whole problem. I am doing this as root?
I had some heat issue that caused my system to crash a number of times. When restarting the machine, I saw something about my filesystem having read-only permissions but that message is no longer there. Could this be causing my issue???

I think I crashed my linux some long time ago, and upon boot it told me read only... I think I ran fsck and all went fine again...

Is there any error message resulted in trying to set the permissions?
