New OS is supposed to debut this evening, one of the big issues with Android is the fragmentation. Hopefully they have made that disappear with this release

If I remember right this is the one that more or less merges 2 & 3 into on (phone and tablet versions into one)?

4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is said to be a combination of Gingerbread and Honeycomb into a "cohesive whole"

nice... now just a question of what phones/devices will be able to fully run it?

Phone I'm looking at now (2 of them actually) can run 2.3, so hoping it may be able to run 4?

From what I read, if the device can run honeycomb, then it should be able to handle ICS with no problems.

Now patiently waiting on a cyanogen mod for the touchpad.

Just got a Galaxy S II this weekend, and I'm really hoping that it might be getting some of that ICS love, the GSII has at least a faster processor than the galaxy nexus (1.5 -v- 1.2), so hopefully that's a good sign.
Though, the experience I've had with the first galaxy s is that samsung is slow to get updates out.

Yeah, that's sort of the curse of android, that it's up to the individual manufacturers to provide the updates, because most of them make some alterations to the system. Carriers can pressure them, but it's up to the manufacturers, the one exception is the Nexus line, which all receive updates directly from google.

Or most people end up getting a ROM off one of the many sites dedicated to development and use that. I generally stick with cyanogen mod till they update it. (which is usually really fast)

Thats for the update, surprisingly the article didnt talk about the most important feature IMHO which was the fragmentation. Did that get overlooked, or did the site just not mention anything about it?

in theory ice cream should kill the fragmentation between android 2.x and 3.x
it brings all of the features of honeycomb (3.x) into the phone (2.x) world.

I'm curious if the motorola xoom (already on honeycomb, and was the google standard for honeycomb) will get 4.0

Since I'm "stuck" on android 2.2, anything would be an improvement! Sadly for me, the only way I can get the upgrade is to actually get a new phone.

If I had to get a phone today it would be the nexus for sure. Or the SII Galaxy Epic 4g touch...

(when did phones name get so long?)

Again, I would suggest checking out XDA's site to see if there are other ROMS out for your phone. It's pretty easy to flash between different ROMS.

I've considered rooting my Droid (the original), but my fear is bricking the phone. If that happens I'm up a creek!

I just got the Galaxy S II on tmobile (hercules I think is the name), and I have to say, this thing just blows me away. It's got a dual 1.5ghz chip, faster than anything else out (even the new nexus by .3, though the nexus I believe is getting more ram). But there isn't a hiccup with it. I get in the car, plug in the jack for pandora, and it's on, no lag at all. And the 4g, I'm getting sustained 12/mbs, which honestly is faster than I ever imagined getting on a phone. Plus, tmobile allows tethering without an additional charge, so I'm pretty happy with what I've got for the moment.
I really would like to see android 4.0, I'd like to see better dev support, and I'd also like to see apps and games that can make better use of the high end hardware coming out.
