    System Restore Failures

I've been having problems installing programs lately. They would take 5-15 minutes to initialize before any progress was made. I decided to finally look further into it after I was unable to install and update a program.

Apparently the long hang time before installing is system restore trying to create a restore point. The problem is that it eventually fails (Event ID 8193). There are many of these errors going back to 10/19/11.

I've tried to turn off and turn on system restore. That didn't work and it got rid of my last successful restore point on 10/15/11.

I've tried to use my install disk and do an "upgrade" as a non destructive rebuild. That didn't work.

I've tried setting vss and swprv to automatic in services. That hasn't worked.

    SFC /Scannow didn't find anything.

    I've tried following some steps:

    1. Click ‘Start’, type “cmd”, right-click and select “Run as administrator”.

    2. Execute the following commands:

    Net stop vss
    Net stop swprv

    3. Change directory to \windows\system32 (i.e.: cd C:\windows\system32)

    4. Register the below mentioned .dll files by executing the following commands:

    regsvr32 ole32.dll
    regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
    vssvc /Register
    regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
    regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
    regsvr32 es.dll
    regsvr32 stdprov.dll
    regsvr32 vssui.dll
    regsvr32 msxml.dll
    regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    regsvr32 msxml4.dll

    5. Execute the following commands:

    Net Start vss
    Net Start swprv

    6. Re-run the command: vssadmin list writers.

    This hasn't worked.

When I try to manually create a restore point it takes about 10 minutes and I get an error "the creation of a shadow copy has timed out".

This is frustrating and I'd like to get this resolved without having to do a format/reinstall as that takes a bit of time.

I think Tax's suggestion is the best, and I'd even go so far as to say if it doesn't work to just salvage what files you can and do a fresh install. I realize you may not want to do it as it is time consuming and destructive (if you don't backup your important files), but the problem you're having may very well be indicative of a lot of Windows corruption. How it got this way? I have no clue. But I do know a few things won't help like running through the cadre of dlls and re-registering every one of them. I don't know what the problem is as it could be anything but typically at times like these I'd say reinstalling is necessary.

The only other suggestion that I can offer is something simple: did you check the Task Scheduler for SR? I know it sounds simple but shutting off the SR service may not have any effect on the system if certain tasks are scheduled. Here is a guide for using Task Scheduler, Windows 7 or Vista - How-To Geek - Task Scheduler.

If nothing is scheduled in your Task Scheduler and you're still having the problem. Eh... *shrugs* I'd reinstall but that's me.

I tried doing the repair install before, using the 'upgrade' method, mentioned in my first post, it didn't do anything.

Still need to try startup repair from the recovery console.
Also will try checking out the task scheduler.

I believe this all happened when I was installing a game from steam called dungeon defenders... it would hang trying to install directx and I had to download a fix from the game creators faq page.

The fix was to download a working set of a cutdown directx install and a registry fix that put in an entry to tell the game that the things were installed and to bypass the directx and c++ redist installers.

Have you tired Check Disk? You may have drive issues...

Click on my computer/C drive/R Click/properties/Tools/ Check Now.

I think it reboots and then checks your disk.

Finally, I'd go into safe mode or whatever and retrieve all of your files and photos and back them up on a DVD or another drive.

Then plan on reformatting your disk with the mfg's utility, and reinstalling Windoze 7.
