If the CD Drive is SOLELY a CD Drive and Not a CD/DVD Reading drive, then yes, a DVD with Data on it will not be able to be read.
as to the 2nd question, I'll have to let some others answer that.
I know sometimes a Program like WinZip or WinRAR can be used to compress the File into a smaller size, if its just a bit beyond the size limit of the medium that is being used to record to, but unsure of anything else beyond that.
I have seen Compressed Zip or RAR files reduced to 50% of their normal expanded size before, but everytime I have ever tried this, I have never gotten more than 10-20% size reduction.
