Post M$ claims it will stop support for XP in 2 years

Microsoft sets end of Windows XP support - UPI.com
REDMOND, Wash., April 11 (UPI) -- Microsoft says Windows XP users have two years to remain with the older operating system before it ends all support and updates for the software.

While users can continue to use Windows XP after the end of Microsoft support, the lack of such support and updates, especially security patches, will make the operating system less and less secure as time passes, Microsoft's Stella Chernyak wrote in a blog post.
It really sounds like M$ needs some people to help them fill their coffers.

I have NO intention of upgrading any time soon. My 3 XP systems haven't had any problems in years, but some people might want to start looking.
They say technology slows down for no one. I know it outruns my wallet. I figure its because my wallet isn't light enough yet.

The do have quite a business model. I was hoping the democrats would do something about it. They are usually first on the bus for this stuff.

How would you feel if GM or Ford just announced they were going to stop making parts for your car in two years?

It's really unique and is a tribute to their success. Most businesses prefer to leave good enough alone, so Microsoft has to strong arm them into buying another system.

There is a point where something is "good enough".
Obama: The rich have the Federal Reserve and the poor have Harry Reid... LOL. Life really is unfair!

And not only that, but XP is over 10 years old now....( October 25, 2001 was retail release) You can't expect them to support it forever.

If it's been running fine for you, who is to say it won't? You just won't have continued support after 2014. Personally I feel pulling the plugs on support after about 13 years on an OS is perfectly fine and expected.

No, they're (IMO) sick of dumping money into patching and supporting a product that is severely outdated. As sharder mentioned, this has been known for a while. If anything, we've had a few reprieves. XP would have gone away sooner if Vista had been what it was supposed to be and netbooks hadn't exploded onto the scene.

Only you would attempt to link those two things.

How would you feel if GM or Ford just announced they were going to stop making parts for your car in two years?
A lot of parts are after-market. Cars=/=computers. In this case it's been a decade, not two years, so your analogy is utter nonsense.

It's really unique and is a tribute to their success. Most businesses prefer to leave good enough alone, so Microsoft has to strong arm them into buying another system.
No business leaves good enough alone. Everyone always tries to make their product better in some way. To do otherwise is to be left behind and go bankrupt. Microsoft is not "strong arming" people into buying a new product. They have merely released new products that are more effective in working in the web 2.0 world and are putting their time and efforts into those products instead of trying to patch ancient software.
It seems your business acumen is precisely zero.
    Good job, friend-of-friends!

Add to that, It was known over 2 years ago that XP would be kicking the bucket in support eventually, and now Business's have TWO MORE years to get things changed.

4 or so years is more than enough to get the OS and whatever else they need changed, updated, etc.

As it is, EOL support for Windows 7 is slated for 2020, last I checked. Which had actually increased, last time prior to that, it was only Pro and Enterprise Editions that were 2020, all other versions were 2015. Now it looks like all versions are 2020.

Considering Win7 came out in 2009, thats a good 10-11 year life span there as well.

I, recently, ordered and received a copy of SP 3. I have NO intentions of upgrading. It's worked for me since it came out and most of the programs I use will NOT run on Vista or Win 7.
My wife's new laptop has Win 7 if I need to do something I can't on my others machines.

Just curious, but what software are you using that is known to be incompatible with Win 7?

I've got tons of older programs laying around that I installed without a hitch on Win7.

On top of that, Windows 7 Pro has XP mode built in, so.... yea

I love XP and use XP 64 on my desktop and XP Pro on my laptop. But I want to upgrade to Windows 7 for DX 10 so I can play BF3. And anyways it's fine by me if the drop support. I don't run any patches. I've been perfectly fine.

    Sygate firewall , for one.

Reckon, Old Dogs can't learn new tricks. I hated Vista and Win 7 hides settings, etc., I get frustrated as hell.

    DirectX 11... (10 was with Vista, 7 brought 11)

Win 7 doesn't hide settings, just need to put the effort in to find them.

I moved from XP straight to 7 with no Vista in between, and though took a bit of learning to use from XP, I was able to find settings and what not just fine.

Its not like being on Windows for 10 years, and then suddenly having to cope with Linux.

A little reading, patience, and willingness to learn the changes is all it takes.

True enough, it's kinda like buying a new (or used but new to you) car and learning all the features and how to use them, the same principles apply. And no matter which OS you have you have to do SOME reading to better your pc experience. As my math teacher used to say, "The calculator is only as smart as its operator." Kinda makes me laugh to think of someone hitting their desktop for being too slow, killer irony.

I really do not have the time to sit and dig thru a new OS. Especially, after wasting hours trying to figure out Vista. Plus, I refuse to give B. Gates anymore of my money. If I need Win 7, I'll hop over on my wife's rig.

Edit; Which I am posting from now...

Right, because who has time these days to click on the Start Button, then click on Control panel to find the settings, nicely and neatly organized in various categories...

Half the computers I'm told use XP.

Since Win 8 is coming out (next year?), imagine supporting four sperate OS's.This will bring them back to three to support. Also what about developers--do they develop for all supported OS?

I know it is not exactly something affecting 99.9999%+ of consumer- and SMB-class users, but Microsoft ditched both versions of Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for Itanium back in 2005.

Think losing OS support for a decade-old x86 desktop or notebook is annoying? How about losing OS support for a $25000+ IA64 workstation that might only be a year or two old?

No support, no security updates, etc. for a system that should otherwise have a realistic deployment span of several years, even in HPC-class roles. Version 2003 users might have received two years of viable OS support from initial public release to discontinuation of availability and support.

BTW, I have a HP workstation with two Itanium 2 processors. It is not my primary desktop, but it is still acceptable for much of my daily computing tasks if need be. It runs debian-ia64, which is still actively supported by the open source community.

What about XP for thin clients? Do they have Windows 7 for thin clients? I can't imagine that they do sense Win 7 is so massive.
